About the Self Defence Club

Practical Self-Defence • Personal Safety • Confidence • Fitness too?

The Self Defence Club is exactly what it says on the tin! A community-based unincorporated constitutional self-defence club dedicated to helping people develop the skills, awareness and confidence to better protect themselves and those around them. Run by a management committee, owned and operated by its members!

Due to the strict standards stipulated by the license agreement using Krav Maga GB name and brand are instructors and coaches hold international recognised qualifications in Krav Maga, working in partnership with major international Krav Maga organisations and recognised globally.

Our approach to self-defence goes beyond simply learning physical techniques. We believe that effective personal protection starts with awareness, avoidance and good decision-making, and that physical skills are there to support you when other options are no longer available.

What We Teach

Training incorporates practical self-defence skills alongside:

  • Situational and environmental awareness
  • Threat recognition and avoidance
  • Verbal communication and de-escalation
  • Escape and disengagement
  • Defensive movement and positioning
  • Practical striking and defensive techniques
  • Protection against common physical attacks
  • Ground and close-quarter defence
  • Scenario-based training
  • Fitness, conditioning and resilience
  • Stress management and decision-making under pressure

Training is progressive, practical and adaptable to different levels of experience and physical ability.

More Than Just Fighting

Our aim isn't to turn people into fighters or encourage confrontation.

Quite the opposite.

We teach members to recognise potentially dangerous situations early, create distance where possible, avoid unnecessary confrontation and, when necessary, respond appropriately and lawfully.

The philosophy of the Club can be summed up simply:

Recognise → Avoid → De-escalate → Escape → Protect → Respond

Physical intervention should always be considered a last resort where circumstances require it.

A Safe and Respectful Training Environment

Everyone deserves to feel safe and respected while learning.

Our Club promotes an environment based upon:

Respect • Discipline • Responsibility • Inclusion • Teamwork

Members are expected to treat training partners, instructors and other members with respect. Bullying, intimidation, harassment, discrimination and deliberately unsafe behaviour have no place within the Club.

Training is conducted progressively, with safety being a fundamental priority.

Who Is It For?

The Club is suitable for people who want to:

  • Improve their personal safety awareness
  • Learn practical self-defence
  • Build confidence
  • Improve fitness and conditioning
  • Develop resilience
  • Learn how to respond under pressure
  • Meet like-minded people
  • Develop skills that could be useful in everyday life

You do not need to be exceptionally fit, strong or experienced to begin.

Beginners are welcome, and training can be adapted to individual ability and experience.

Our Philosophy

We believe that self-defence is ultimately about protecting life, creating opportunity and getting home safely.

There is no ego in self-defence.

There is no prize for winning a confrontation.

The best outcome is often the situation you successfully avoided.

Our goal is therefore to develop capable, confident and responsible individuals who understand that their greatest self-defence tools are often awareness, judgement, communication and the ability to leave a dangerous situation.

Where physical skills are required, members are taught to use them responsibly, proportionately and within the law.
